According to Indiana Administrative Rule 8, all trial courts in the State of Indiana use what is known as the "uniform case numbering system," which in its four groups of numbers and letters identifies the court, the year/month of filing, the case type and the filing sequence. The following information is an explanation of how to read these and understand what they mean. If you have any questions about case numbers or types you may contact our office and we will help answer any questions about the case numbers that we can.
In our example, the case was filed in Marion County Superior Court (Municipal Division)
Number 19.

The second group, consisting of four numbers, indicates the year and month the case was filed, using the last two digits of the year and by numbering the months from 1 to 12.

In our example, the case was filed in 2006, 12 the month , i.e. December, 2006.

In our example, after the filing date, the two (2) letters that follow that date are the charge level, either in a criminal case or in a civil case. These two (2) letters can be looked up in Case Types that follows. This listing will tell you exactly what the case type and level are.

The fourth group may consist of any number of characters assigned sequentially to a case when it is filed. It shall begin with a "1" at the beginning of each year for each case classification (or for each docket book if more than one case classification is grouped within a single docket) and continue sequentially until the end of the year. The number of digits in this group will be determined by the number of cases filed within a given classification or docket.

Court Codes According to the State of Indiana Administrative Rule 8, "uniform case numbering system."
